Light emitting diode (LED) headlights complement modern styling
The 100 Series Lawn Tractors are equipped with LED headlights that:
- Complement the tractor’s modern styling
- Use less power and are far more durable than incandescent light bulbs
- Provide a natural light quality that increases visibility in low-light conditions
- Light the field of view evenly
Hood will not rust or dent
The hood used on 100 Series Lawn Tractors is made using the mold-in color process. The hood reduces sound, will not rust or dent, and provides resistance to UV light. Side openings let in plenty of cooling air while keeping the sound level low.
Reliable full-length welded steel frame
The solid one-piece frame is constructed of 12-gauge, 0.105-in. (2.66-mm) steel:

The CargO Mount system is a combination of front- and rear-mounting points providing convenient and easy installation of the sun canopy, rear bagger, and other attachments.
An advantage of lawn tractors is their ability to use equipment for snow removal. Lawn tractor owners can add a John Deere snow blower or front blade to make quick work of moving snow whenever the need arises. Weather enclosure and tire-chain attachments add comfort and performance.
Equipment available for snow removal includes:
- 44-in. (112-cm) Snow Blower

- Large pedal surface gives superior operator comfort.
Appropriate transmissions are used in each model, depending on rear tire size and tractor performance requirements, to ensure excellent performance and reliability:
- Tuff Torq TLT200 – S100, S110, S120, S130, S140, and S160
- Tuff Torq K46 - S170 and S180
Kanzaki and Tuff Torq are trademarks of Kanzaki Kokyukoki Mfg. Co., Ltd.
The operator station is designed for operator comfort and easy operation:
- Controls are positioned where they are easy to reach and easy to use to control the tractor.
- Steering wheel is positioned and angled to give the operator plenty of room and steering comfort.
- Seat is positioned to provide the most comfortable operator position.
Controls are easy to see and use:
- Large, three-spoke steering wheel for greater operator comfort and control
- Ignition switch is on the dash for starting ease
Wide footrest areas with non-slip, anti-vibration floor mats are provided for operator comfort:
- The wide footrest makes it easier to step over the mower deck while entering or exiting the seat.
- Debris-removing channels help keep the footrest area clean and dry.
The operator seat has an 11-in. (28-cm) back height. It can be easily adjusted forward or rearward while the operator is in the seat, with seat travel of 5.5 in. (14 cm) and 10 different positions.
A beverage holder is located on the right-side fender for operator convenience.
Two long seat springs give plenty of seat travel to smooth out the ride, keeping the operator comfortable while operating the tractor.
Seat can be tilted forward for protection from the elements and to provide easy access to the fuel tank.
A covered storage compartment and beverage holder on the right-side fender are conveniently located and easy to use.
Instruments and controls
The contoured dash has clean, attractive styling:
- Controls are color-coded and labeled for easy identification.
- Controls are logically placed and easy to reach.
- The hour meter makes it easy to tell when oil changes and other maintenance should be performed.
- Functional design of the controls provides good appearance and a comfortable feel.
Side-by-side transmission control pedals
Side-by-side foot pedals control the speed and direction of travel:
- Automotive-type accelerator controls ensure easy operation.
- Operator can change direction without lifting foot off the platform.
- Large pedal surface gives superior operator comfort.
Mower deck height adjustment
A spring-assisted, ergonomically designed lift lever simplifies adjusting the mower cut height:
- Increments of 1/4 in. (0.64 cm) allow fine-tuning the cut height.
- Cut height is adjustable from 1 to 4 in. (2.5 to 10.2 cm).
- The lift handle is shaped for easy use and is out of the way of entering or exiting operators.
Parking brake control
The parking brake control is conveniently located on the tractor pedestal for easy access. It holds the brake pedal securely in the locked position.
Manual power take-off (PTO)
The mower deck is engaged with the easy-to-see and easy-to-use yellow lever above the dashboard. Its placement on the right side leaves a lot of room on the left, the entry side of the tractor, for the operator to get on and off the tractor.
Reverse implement option (RIO)
Using RIO
CAUTION: Children or bystanders may be injured by rotating blades. Before traveling forward or rearward:
- Carefully check the area around the machine.
- Disengage the mower before backing up.
NOTE: Backing up while the mower is engaged is strongly discouraged. RIO should be used only when operating another attachment or when the operator deems it necessary to reposition the machine with the mower engaged.
- Stop forward travel.
- Look behind the machine to be sure there are no bystanders.
- Push and hold in the RIO switch while depressing the reverse pedal slightly.
NOTE: If the engine and mower or other attachment stops while repositioning the machine, return the attachment engagement lever/switch to the off position. Start the engine and engage mower or other attachment. Begin again with step 2.
- Release the RIO switch and reposition the machine as the machine begins to move rearward.
- Resume forward travel. The mower or other attachment should continue operating.
- Repeat procedure to position the machine again.
Fuel tank gauge shows fuel level from the operator's seat
The fuel tank gauge shows how much fuel is in the tank and can be seen without leaving the operator's seat:
- Easy to check fuel level
- Convenient location
John Deere riding lawn mowers are equipped with a QR code label that links to an owner support website. The label can be found on the rear fender, to the left of the seat.
The owner support website is formatted for smart phones and available without setting up an account and password. The QR code includes the mower’s serial number, enabling the owner support website to provide a maintenance schedule, service parts, attachments, how-to guide, videos, warranty information, and an operator’s manual for the specific mower.
The owner support website also allows users to purchase service parts, schedule dealer service, purchase extended warranties, and download the Equipment Mobile app. The Equipment Mobile app enables users to maintain a shared digital service record with their dealer.
Serviceability is convenient with an easy-open hood
The one-piece hood opens easily to permit checking and servicing the engine:
- Important service points are located within easy reach.
- A service interval decal is provided inside the tractor hood for convenience when servicing the tractor.
The engine fuel and oil filters, the oil check/fill tube, and the oil drain tube are exposed for serviceability when the hood is opened.
The seat tilts up and out of the way to make adding fuel easy.
Overview
Keep your John Deere equipment running its best with the John Deere Equipment Mobile App. Download the app from the mobile device’s app store, then add all your John Deere equipment by scanning the serial number bar codes. Once your equipment is added, you can access all your product’s model, serial number, and model year information in one place. The app also provides maintenance, parts, and support resources that are specific to your serial number(s).
Find the right parts the first time
It is important to get the right parts the first time. When you load your equipment list, Equipment Mobile provides parts information specific to your serial number(s). This is helpful to you and your John Deere dealer, as some parts can vary by serial number range.
Plan, track, and coordinate maintenance with your dealer
Equipment Mobile includes comprehensive maintenance plans for each piece of your equipment. The maintenance plan screen keeps track of completed tasks, provides a place for your notes, and provides parts listings. You can also share your maintenance plan with your dealership, enabling tasks completed by the dealer to be included.
Operator’s manual in the palm of your hands
A machine’s operator’s manual is a go-to resource that is available in Equipment Mobile. You can search, view, and download a copy. The operator’s manual is specific to the serial number(s) of your equipment.
Smart Connectors
A smart connector links the mower to the Equipment Mobile App and transmits vehicle information via Bluetooth® wireless technology to provide:
- Engine hours, that enable maintenance reminders
- Key switch status and battery level to warn if the battery is low
- Fuel level - even when away from the mower, the app remembers the fuel level so you can make sure the mower is fueled when it is time to mow
Optional BUC11960 smart connector is for use with:
- S120, S130, S160, S170, and S180 Tractors
- Model year 2021 and newer S240 Tractors (serial number 880,001-)
- Z515E, Z530M, Z530R, and Z545R ZTrakâ„¢ Mowers
Hours, fuel level, key switch status, and battery level are updated whenever the Equipment Mobile device is in range of a mower with a BUC11960 smart connector.
Optional BUC10537 smart connector is for use with:
- Model year 2016 and newer Select Series X300 and X500 Tractors
Hours, fuel level, key switch status, and battery level are updated whenever the mower’s key is turned on and the Equipment Mobile device is in range of a mower with a BUC10537 smart connector. The X350R Tractor does not report exact fuel level, it only indicates if the mower is low on fuel.
The Z370R, Z370RS, and Z380R Electric ZTrak Mowers include the smart connector in base equipment.
On Electric ZTrak Mowers the battery level, charging status, and hours are transmitted when the Equipment Mobile device is in range of the mower, and the mower is on or actively charging. Equipment Mobile can also update an Electric ZTrak Mower’s controller software.
A smart connector requires the Equipment Mobile App. The John Deere Equipment Mobile App can be found in the mobile device’s app store.

I bought a John Deere bagger for my zero turn. It’s a horrible design! Dirt and debris comes out of the mesh bags and comes out all underneath your legs and feet from under the mower. I called John Deere and they’re like well. You bought it from an independent dealer and you’ll have to deal with them. I said so you don’t stand behind your bad design? that was pretty much the end of it

I'm giving this company a 1 star I wish there were a zero then they would be worthy. I brought a john deer D100 to cut My front and rear year which was very small. My lawn guy warned me not to gett a deer. He said they are not what they use to be. Not listening I brought the D100 and its been one of the worst decisions I've ever made. It's been in the repair shop 3 times and Sat there about 3 months at a time. But the worst part is the units only have about 50 hours of use. Wow. Every place I call said that impossible, but it the truth. I've call John deere and ask the to replace the unit because it was just one that happened to be a lemon. They won't accept that because they think they are above normal. Now I'm at the point where I'm going to give it away because I'm not selling it and putting anyone in this situation. I know I'm just one person but stay away from john deere.

I purchased S100 in summer of 2021. During that summer, my trouble started with this mower with belt slipping off and uneven cut. Since, it was under warranty the local dealer sent a guy to fix. When he couldn't then they picked up and fixed. So, I was without lawn mower for more than a month. Recently (my 3rd summer of using) mower quit in the middle with burning rubber smell and doesn't start. Dealer said we can come, pick for a fee and give estimate. They will tell how much it cost. Also telling me it will take about a month before they can get it. This means that I will be again without a mower for rest of this summer (2024). This is a bad mower with bad service.

I bought this one a month ago to replace my 15yo Snapper 28-inch rear engine riding mower. In 2009, the Snapper was only riding mower to fit thru 40-inch gate in 2004 white vinyl fence. Fence was extended in 2019 and 54-inch gate installed. Finally able to buy a John Deere S100 42-inch and have truly enjoyed it. Looking forward to January to use the bagger when the oak leaves begin to drop.
